2024 TV & Movie MiniReviews: Godzilla Minus One, Zone of Interest, Beekeeper, Dumb Money, Eileen, Founders Day, Fargo, The Curse, The Passenger, American Nightmare

Sorry folks, it’s been a while since I posted but I’ve been pretty busy with life stuff. I’ve been tired and fairly unmotivated to write beyond my 9-5 and freelance stuff. However, I’ve seen my share of new content over the past month, so I decided to do some mini-reviews for ya’ll – 7 films,Continue reading “2024 TV & Movie MiniReviews: Godzilla Minus One, Zone of Interest, Beekeeper, Dumb Money, Eileen, Founders Day, Fargo, The Curse, The Passenger, American Nightmare”

2023 Golden Shrimp Award WINNERS

Nothing fancy this year, just a list of my winners. This is as close to a meritocracy as I could get. Best Picture Not even nominated for a single fucking Oscar, my favorite film of the year was also the most emotionally resonant. I think the actual problem is that voters didn’t see this movie.Continue reading “2023 Golden Shrimp Award WINNERS”

2024 Movie Reviews: All of Us Strangers / Night Swim / They Cloned Tyrone

One clear loser this week. All of Us Strangers One film that needs more awards and audience attention is Andrew Haigh‘s All of Us Strangers, arguably the exceptional British auteur’s best. Perhaps it’s because every Oscar movie this season is big and loud with a capital L – Poor Things, Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, etc. Not to mentionContinue reading “2024 Movie Reviews: All of Us Strangers / Night Swim / They Cloned Tyrone”

2024 Movie Reviews: Ferrari / American Fiction / Birth/Rebirth / The Outwaters

Three hits and a surprising miss. Ferrari One of my most anticipated movies this Oscar season was Michael Mann‘s return to filmmaking after eight long years, Ferrari, a picture he’s been trying to make for decades. I had heard it was an amusing throwback to 90s and 80s historical dramas set outside the U.S. that cast AmericanContinue reading “2024 Movie Reviews: Ferrari / American Fiction / Birth/Rebirth / The Outwaters”

2023 Movie Reviews: Poor Things / Maestro / The Iron Claw

Two studs and a dud this week. Poor Things An absolute on-brand delight from the often brilliant Yorgos Lathinmos, a Greek auteur who excels at making weird shit. Poor Things might just be his weirdest shit yet, based on a 1992 novel by the recently departed Alasdair Gray and adapted for the screen by The Favourite scribe Tony McNamara. It’s about a psychologicallyContinue reading “2023 Movie Reviews: Poor Things / Maestro / The Iron Claw”

2023 Movie Reviews: The Boy and the Heron / Dream Scenario / Passages

One clear winner this week. The Boy and the Heron (How Do You Live?) Japanese anime master and Studio Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki returned from retirement for what I assume was a bid to save his company’s reputation from the clutches of his son, Goro. Sorry, Goro, but your 2020 computer-animated Earwig and the Witch was perhaps the worst cartoon I’veContinue reading “2023 Movie Reviews: The Boy and the Heron / Dream Scenario / Passages”

Top 10 Movies I Saw For First Time in 2023

People always tell me I’ve seen every movie ever made and I have to laugh at how incorrect they are. Granted, I’ve usually watched significantly more movies than they have, but it’s estimated there are roughly 500,000 movies in existence. I’ve seen almost 4,000, nearly 1% of every movie ever made. That’s nothing. I tryContinue reading “Top 10 Movies I Saw For First Time in 2023”

2023 Movie Reviews: Napoleon / Thanksgiving / May December / Rustin / Saltburn / Slotherhouse / When Evil Lurks / Sanctuary

Three good movies this week. Napoleon Ridley Scott is no stranger to violent and rousing historical epics, but when he tries to take a more human approach, especially one involving comedy, all bets are off. That’s my main issue with Napoleon, a four hour miniseries trimmed down to a terribly paced 158-minute theatrical release, it’sContinue reading “2023 Movie Reviews: Napoleon / Thanksgiving / May December / Rustin / Saltburn / Slotherhouse / When Evil Lurks / Sanctuary”

2023 TV & Movie Reviews: The Killer / The Holdovers / Frasier / Priscilla / No Hard Feelings

An unlikely champion this week. The Killer I can’t remember the last time I saw something as slight and forgettable as David Fincher‘s The Killer, a technically dazzling but ultimately hollow revenge drama about a sociopathic nutbag (a very good Michael Fassbender) seeking revenge on the clients and colleagues who tried to do him in. We’ve seen soContinue reading “2023 TV & Movie Reviews: The Killer / The Holdovers / Frasier / Priscilla / No Hard Feelings”
